Designed by John Wood of Bath and built 1749-54 it was the third town
hall built by the city. Seriously damaged by fire in 1795 the building
was reconstructed by John Wyatt who added the impressive dome and the
two storey Corinthian Portico. The building has survived numerous attempts
at damage. In 1775 seamen, protesting against the reduction in their wages
attacked the building with a cannon, their employers were sheltering inside
and in 1881 there was an abortive attempt by the Feinians to blow it up.
